How to brace your core

My fool-proof trick to learn how to brace your core…

Ever been told in an fitness class to brace or engage your core and thought: do-what-now? The core muscles are essential for stability, posture, balance, and just about every movement we do.

During exercise, it’s really important to engage the core muscles so that they keep the body stable during movement and protect it from injury.

A strong core supports the spine and can reduce lower back pain, while weak tummy muscles can mean that even basic tasks - such as getting out of bed or simply standing - difficult.

How do I brace the core?

When my PT clients first come to me I always tell them about my fool-proof trick to learn how to brace the core. And it’s really quite simple.

Close your eyes. Imagine that someone is about to punch you in the stomach, or you’re going to sneeze. Visualise this as you breathe in, zipping your belly button towards your spine and you will naturally tighten (brace) the core muscles to protect yourself. That’s how to engage the core.

Practice this a few times a week then use it next time you’re doing a plank, push up or squat.

What are the benefits of strengthening the core?

When your core is strong you will also have:

  • Better posture

  • Less back pain

  • Improved balance

  • More stability

  • Less risk of injury

  • Better workout technique

Core engagement takes time to learn, but with some patience and practice you can master it!
